COURSE SYLLABI

COURSE TITLE: Physical Education
DEPARTMENT: Physical Education Department
LEVEL: Grade Six thru Eight (6-8)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will provide opportunities for individuals to learn skills, develop fitness, and participate in activities that provide lifetime interests, physiological results and wholesome social interchange. Daily dress and participation are required. Written tests on sport rules, history, game strategies will be given.

COURSE OUTCOMES: A physically educated person will:

. Acquire skills and knowledge of lifetime activities.
. Will demonstrate how to achieve, maintain and assess cardiovascular
fitness, strength, and flexibility.
. Apply principles of safety in physical education activities.
. Possess a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology as they relate to physical
activity.
. Gain a personal awareness of his/her body and an understanding of how
his/her body works through a variety of activities.
. Recognize democratic and mutual respect with regard to sportsmanship,
both inside the classroom and in the everyday situations.
. Demonstrate a personal regard for the rights of others and work
cooperatively with others.
. Set goals to challenge himself/herself, physically, mentally and
emotionally.

COURSE OUTLINE:

FIRST SEMESTER:

Golf – Grip, Stance, “even tempo”, explanation of rules. Explain backswing (coil), downswing (uncoil), sweeping the grass. Explain Putting, follow through. Written rules test, and games.

Soccer - Introduction of soccer history, playing area, number of players on the field, necessary equipment and object of the game,. Teach skills of dribbling, passing, trapping, shooting on goal. Use of video camera to show students performing skills. Vary shooting distances beginning with short distance and moving further away.

Physical Fitness – The Physical Fitness Test recognizes students for their level of physical fitness in 5 events: curl-ups or partial curl-ups, shuttle run, endurance run/walk, pull-ups or right angle push-ups, and V-sit or sit and reach.

SECOND SEMESTER:

Basketball- - Introduction of basketball history, court area, number of players on the court, necessary equipment and object of the game,. Teach skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting. Use of video camera to show students performing skills. Vary shooting distances beginning with lay-ups and moving set/jump shots.

Volleyball - Introduction of volleyball history, court area, number of players on the court, necessary equipment and object of the game,. Teach skills of bumping, setting, and serving. Use of video camera to show students performing skills.

Badminton – Introduction of game, parts of the racket, grip, stance, forehand and backhand strokes and footwork. Short serve and long serve and singles and doubles strategy. Explain rules of game and scoring. Play a round robin tournament. Written test and student self evaluation.

Physical Fitness – The Physical Fitness Test recognizes students for their level of physical fitness in 5 events: curl-ups or partial curl-ups, shuttle run, endurance run/walk, pull-ups or right angle push-ups, and V-sit or sit and reach.

Pickleball – Introduction of game, racket, grip, stance, forehand and backhand strokes. Serving, scoring, singles and doubles strategy. Introduce rules of the game, round robin tournament, written test and student self evaluation.

Ultimate Frisbee – Teach and demonstrate how to throw and catch the frisbee. Explain the rules of the game. Show video of Ultimate Frisbee game skills.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:

Acquire skills and knowledge of lifetime activities.

1. Demonstration of sport techniques by instructor or video or student athlete.
2. Student drill related to that technique.
3. Handout and discussion of rules.
4. Discussion and demonstration of team and individual game strategy.
5. Written tests of sport knowledge.

Will demonstrate how to achieve, maintain and assess cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility

1. Daily warm-up, stretching, aerobic activity and cool down.
2. Emphasis on the importance of aerobic conditioning three times a week for a minimum
of 30 minutes throughout one’s lifetime.
3. Use of weights and/or appropriate exercises to develop strength.

Apply principles of safety in physical education activities.

1. Explanation of the importance of warm-up and cool down as it relates to the physiology
of the body and physical injuries.
2. Importance of treating sports equipment with respect for their personal
safety and that of others.
3. Teach the correct techniques of each activity.

Gain a personal awareness of their bodies and an understanding of how their bodies work through a variety of activities.

1. Discovering the limits of their bodies in a variety of activities.
2. Use of video equipment in analyzing student physical skills.
3. Opening up new areas of lifetime activities to students by introducing them to a variety
of activities.

Demonstrate a personal regard for the rights of others and work cooperatively with others.

1. In the choosing of teams and team captains.
2. Through team play respect the rules of the game concerning conduct of players and
officials.
3. To provide an atmosphere that allows students to try different activities without fear of
embarrassment or ridicule by other students.

EVALUATION AND GRADING:

The quarter grades for Physical Education will be based on written tests, class participation, and dress.

10% Written Tests (sport rules, terms, history)
10% Fitness & Skill Evaluation (based on physical test results)

** Non-dress / non-participation grades will be lowered (20) twenty points.
For each non-participation grade will result in lowering grade (10) points.

Physical Education grades are calculated using percentages.

Percentages –
A = 100% - 93%
B = 92% - 85%
C = 85% - 75%
D = 74% - 70%
F = 69% or lower

The semester grade will be determined from the following:

First Quarter grade = 50% Third Quarter grade = 50%
Second Quarter grade = 50% Fourth Quarter grade = 50%
Semester Grade = 100% Semester Grade = 100%

PE Goals for Daily Class Participation

The Mission Statement at Schilling Farms Middle School is designed to promote growth in all areas of the student’s education. In physical education, skill, as well as discipline, are tools that go hand in hand in shaping the potential and talent within each student.
